The ‘taste’ of Victory

Image
So David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath…he cut off his head with the sword. ..I Samuel 17:51   The joy of accomplishment. Bubbles within. Excitement untold. Sleep and wake up with a knowing prevailing inner strength. It's that time of the year you are allowed to evaluate your performance over a period of twelve months, summarize your achievements in relation to your goals and justify why you deserve to merit a particular rating or score.   It's a yearly routine in the workplace though but it somewhat comes with butterflies in the stomach and 'what ifs'.   It's that time you dare not say the wrong thing.   Every word counts. Being confident matters.   Neither 'empty' eloquence nor political speeches will hold much weight. Proofs upon proofs maybe. Evidence.   Records and results that speak for themselves.   Good or bad. My two team leaders on one side and I on the other undergoin

October Opts Out

Image
So I woke up very excited that Sunday morning. Just a little over one hour journey to get to Aba, the town where I grew up and left sixteen years ago. I was going home. Close to my land of nativity where my life like a clean slate had her foundational letters written upon. I walked down to the park and boarded a coaster bus for the a-little-over-one hour journey. My first ‘aha’ moment was when I was asked to squeeze myself in the middle of four passengers sitting on a row of seats obviously meant for four people. I was surprised and unhappy though other passengers didn’t seem to mind. Imagine sitting in a way that you couldn’t move your hands to ransack your hand bag like a typical lady even if you had nothing exactly you were looking for. Very awkward posture and to think that I paid full fare with other passengers was unfair. I reminded myself a lesson I learnt recently, when you are sandwiched in between two slices of ‘bread’, you burrow within and enjoy the world in t

Newly Wedded

While at the airport waiting for a flight that had been delayed, I decided to look around and observe my environment. Some people were engrossed with their electronic devices, some chatted away, some dozed off occasionally and some like myself looked around. Like a hub of activities. There was this young couple sitting very close to each other that I doubt if water could trickle down between them. They looked at each other admiringly with contentment like though they were the only ones in the entire lounge and they smiled at each other in a way that spelt ‘new’. I wanted a confirmation, you guessed right, I looked at the fingers and there the glistening bands rested on the marriage fingers. This moment, her hand rested on his shoulders the next, both hands were intertwined on her laps. On the same row with me, another couple with their teenage daughter sat. While the bespectacled husband read newspaper, the mother and daughter talked to each other once in a while. Nothi

Times & Seasons

Just before mid year in Nigeria, West Africa, an array of beautiful colours on roadside makeshift tables is a common sight in major cities as the rains set in. From bright yellow bananas to green avocado pears, water melons and cucumbers to lush fleshy golden mangoes, hard, brown 3-eyed c oconuts 'carrying water from heaven', to prickly pine apples, and what have you! The array of colours remind me of rainbows. It reminds me of God's faithfulness and covenant keeping nature. He sends everything in its season giving human beings all over the world fruits to nourish their mortal bodies. First He sends the rains to the soils and the trees bloom with colours. Most fruits are eaten raw as they come already 'cooked' by the Creator. And guess what? He embeds seed(s) inside each fruit that there may be continuity. He gives you the fruit for today and the seed for tomorrow. Some of the seeds like grass are able to thrive once they come in contac

½ Time Checks in June!

Image
Proverbs 30:19 ...“The way of an eagle in the sky, the way of a snake on a rock, the way of a ship on the high seas, and the way of a man with a young woman” .  June - the middle and the end. The peak. The gradient. In football, the 45 minutes half time during a match is usually a critical time for both teams and their coaches. The footballers who are the main actors need to hear what the coach who ‘acts’ from behind the scene has to say be it …encouragement, instructions, reminders, reprimands. How time flies is a common saying but looking at the clock, one may not see the clock hands ‘flying’. The writer of Proverbs says 4 things are too amazing to him. The way of the eagle and the way of the snake in their natural habitats speak of amazing skillfulness firstly from their genes and also from use and mastery. Both glide, but in different terrains though. The former cannot glide on rocks and the latter certainly cannot glide in high altitudes. But one thing is obviou

That I MAY burn brighter

Image
The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till light of day.   Proverbs 4:18. Growing up in the early eighties, I cherished sitting on my specially made wooden stool in my grandmother’s mud kitchen to watch her make fire from pieces of crushed, dry palm kernel shells and sludge-like fibers gotten from the mills after palm oil has been processed. She handpicks each item – firewood, coconut shell, crushed palm kernel shells, three stones and then strikes a match. She keeps adjusting all the materials till the teeny-weeny fire burns brightly. Then she balances the cooking pot. The cracking sound as the firewood burns out, the peculiar smell of fire and heat in the small kitchen sets the stage for meal time.   If it does not burn, it is not fire. If it does not shine, it is not the sun. Some things are just clear cut. It is either day or night. White or black. A Christian is either growing in faith or floundering in fear. No in-between. God

Beyond Now

Image
Right now, some things matter, some do not. Beyond now, some things will matter, some never will. Time is of great essence they say. When used well, life is enriched. This moment is the time you have waited for. The time you have now is the tomorrow you expected yesterday. This moment connects you with Now. It connects you to your tomorrow. It also connects you with later. Live in the present but see the picture of your tomorrow in your mind’s eyes. Identify what matters and stick to it. What you do or do not do will make a difference someday. The little steps you take today will make you advance in life or keep you several years behind. The new things you learn today and put in good use will keep you relevant and dust away staleness. Beyond now. What will matter?

Buttons

Image
They serve as connectors. They bridge gaps. Buttons when pressed send signals that make a device respond as desired.   Imagine a TV remote without buttons. Technology keeps advancing and we may soon have touch screen or ‘voice’ remote controls. Imagine your shirts without buttons. A brand new car without knobs and buttons.  Buttons come in different sizes, colours, shapes but they serve the same purpose of keeping your shirts fastened or just sewn on for fancy. You may not go out of your way to buy buttons except your work requires use of buttons but if you are about to buy a new clothe and one or two buttons are missing, you would most likely draw the attention of the seller. Buttons assist you communicate with your electronic device when seated some meters away from it. When a button on your remote control for TV, AC, DVD, etc. gets damaged by careless handling, communication line ceases. There is no inflow or outflow from that button. The button loses its function
